SUMMER
WORK OUTS
By Birgitta Lauren
Summer is a great time to
get out doors. Just because you're pregnant doesn't mean you can only exercise
indoors. So let's take it outside and enjoy the warm and sunny our doors. There
is nothing like a brisk walk out in the fresh air to energize you and make you
feel more alive. Especially if you can walk in parks or go hiking in hills and
mountains. There are so many things you can do out doors; bicycling, golf, jogging
(for some), stretching, swimming, pool exercise, and park benches are great
for various strength exercises.
Make sure to dress appropriately so you don't get too hot. Wear breathable cottons.
And do not exercise out doors if it's too hot. Exercise only during cooler times;
early in the morning and later in the evening if it's hot.
Most important is hydration; drink plenty of water when outside. Wear a hat
to protect your face, but allow some body parts to be un-protected from the
sun as you need the vitamin D that your body produces when sun-rays shine on
your skin. Without enough D your body won't absorb calcium into your bones.
Your baby will most likely get the calcium it needs as Mother Nature has safeguarded
this, but you may not. This can cause osteoporosis later in your life. All the
calcium in the world won't do you any good unless you can absorb it. This will
not happen without it's little helpers: Vitamin D, C and weight bearing exercise.
