Chocolate, Hearts & Baby

chocoChocolate! Oh Chocolate….
Who knew Valentines Day could be so good for you. Chocolates history dates back to the Mayans who believed not only  in its divine origins but it’s medicinal properties. Cacao has long been used to reduce fever, anemia, poor appetite, mental fatigue, TB, gout, kidney stones, low virility and to help poor breast milk production digestion, constipation and the nervous system. Today we know how cacao reduces stress, and flavanols improve cognitive function.  Cacao has potassium, phosphorus, copper, iron, zinc magnesium, manganese, vitamin C and omega fatty acids that help cardiovascular heart health. In addition cacao help release dopamine and endorphins further reducing PMS symptoms and depression. . .    It’s chromium content helps blood sugar levels. Together chocolates qualities calms and excites your heart in an aphrodisiac way …..
Raw organic chocolate is of course more nutritious than roasted or more processed beans. and choclate should be consumed dark as the minute milk is included, cacao looses its benefits as dairy’s Sodium Casein protein reduces your body’s ability to absorb nutrients.

Knowing all this, just imagine the benefits for mom and baby. Actually, science from Ylae University shows that pregnant moms consuming chocoalte 5 times a week, have 40% less risk of preeclampsia, than women eating choclate less than once a week. The University of Helsinki, Finland, found daily prenatal choclate consumption produced infants less fearful and laughing more at 6 months.  Perhaps we can assume that all this chocolate also helps make babies with healthier hearts, minds and happier through life.

Parents Diet Affect Baby

January 2011

Wishing newly pregnant Victoria Beckham, Kate Hudson, Natalie Portman and Marion Cotillard wonderful healthy pregnancies and babies.

Black Swan star Natalie Portman has revealed that she swims every day as part of her pregnancy fitness regime. The 29-year-old actress, who is expecting her first child with fiancé Benjamin Millepied, said that she likes to hit the pool daily to keep herself in shape during her pregnancy. -"I have been swimming every day,' she told US Weekly. - 'When I am in my womb-like environment, I am hoping the baby is feeling peaceful.'

healthy babyMoms Diet Causes Child's Future Habits.
A Pregnant mother's diet has been found to to profoundly affect the eating habits & brain development of her child, says an new study from University of Colorado School of Medicine. What mom consumes sensitizes child to like the same flavors, smells, foods and drinks after weaning. This finding accentuates the need for moms to eat extremely healthy during pregnancy as fetus seems to consider anything in womb as "good" or "safe" even if it is not, like alcohol, says scientist Josephine Todrank, PhD.

Prenatal Probiotics Best for Constipation & Baby.
Probiotics is good bacteria in the intestines that protect us from food born illnesses, nutrient deficiencies, colds, flues, infections, yeast infections, skin problems etc..  During pregnancy hormones, fatigue and stress disturb the healthy balance of bacteria in the gut and may cause nausea, vomiting, constipation etc.. Adding probiotics from foods or supplements may help better than taking prescription drugs, by restoring your healthy  gut bacteria. Pregnant and nursing moms that increase their probiotic intake also reduces by 50% their child's risk  of eczema, asthma and atopic dermatitis.

Foods in Early Life Affects Fertility
The Journal of Ecology published a study from Department of ANimal and Plant Sciences, researching 18th century food intake. It found that children born in poor families during a year low crop yields of Barley and Rye did not conceive children. But children born to poor families during years of bumper harvests would all concieve children later. This indicates that pre & postnatal nutrition may alter the development of the reproductive system.

Kids are What Dad Ate Too.

New research from the University of Massachusetts Medical School found that fathers and even more so grandfathers diets affects offspring. If a paternal grandpa went hungry  then grandchild is at higher risk for obesity and cardiovascular disease. Fathers that grew up on low protein diets severely affect the metabolic genes of their future child's liver. The biggest effects are from grandparents exposure histories. This "transgenerational  gene reprogramming" is changing the way scientist are looking at genes and diseases.

Newborns deficient in Vitamin D @ higher risk of infection.

Dr. Carlos of Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, says they've found low vitamin D levels to be a factor in respiratory disease, infection, asthma, viruses and the main cause of infant hospitalization. Apparently vitamin D supplementation, especially in winter for pregnant moms and babies  may help reduce asthma events in infants and children.

Healthy Teeth for Mom = Healthy Baby.

October is dental hygiene month.

The teeth of babies begin to form in the womb, from the fifth or sixth week, their tooth buds already develop, and between the 3rd-6th month, dental crowns already begin to appear. At birth  primary teeth, made up of 20 baby teeth is already deep inside the jawbone. But they don't begins to show until teething.

While the unborn infant's teeth are developing, calcium, phosphorus, and other minerals and vitamins are needed. A balanced and good nutrition and prenatal supplements lets you have enough of these vitamins and minerals for both you and the child in your womb.
When pregnant, many women may experience inflamed gums or gingivitis, caused by hormone fluctuations, poor dental hygiene and consumption of sweets and processed foods. So it is crucial that mom eats well, and takes her vitamins. Omega fatty acids has now been found to have anti-bacterial effects. EPA from fish and AHA had a stronger effects than DHA, in inhibiting growth of oral pathogens.
Dental care will be of utmost importance during pregnancy to keep gums healthy for proper development of baby and a full term pregnancy. Periodontal disease has been shown to increase risk of premature delivery.
HEALTHY GUMS:
1-Brushing and flossing twice a day,
2-Gargle with warm salt water instead of toxic mouth wash,
3-Get regular teeth cleaning and dental care. Preferably before
the 3rd trimester when you shouldn't be lying on your back.
4-Avoid x-rays and radiography if possible, as it's linked to risk
   of low-birth weight infants.
5-Avoid sugar, all sodas, processed foods, as they accelerate
   gum disease.
6-Eat healthy, natural, organic foods.
7-Take a complete prenatal supplement with extra Calcium, D3
   and omega fatty acids.
8-Drinking green tea helps gums. (1 cup a day to limit caffeine)

The Swedish dental company Tepe has special care ultra soft tooth brushes perfectly suited for moms with sensitive gums.  As well as various floss picks and inter dental brushtoothbrushes.

Cancer Prevention
We are all born with the cancer gene, however, our lifestyle choices, factors, environment and our parents and grandparents before us, can literally turn our Cancer DNA either ON or OFF, so lets PREVENT CANCER where it starts - in the womb.
We must advocate for pregnant women to avoid: processed, carcinogenic foods, fried foods, soda, sugar, drugs, meds (like anti depressants as they now show to cause  heart disease and obesity in the children which can lead to cancer) and smoking, chemical exposure, and preventing gestational diabetes, gaining too much weight and hypertension to lower their child's risk for cancer later.
Exercise
Eat only fresh, natural, organic foods
Take good complete prenatal supplements. (Especially one with Folate rather than Folic Acid. Synthetic Folic Acid is linked to higher rates of cancer, as many cannot metabolize it. Food fortification has helped reduce Spina Bifida but is not problem free
Get sufficient unprotected sunlight every day. (10 min,  as Vitamin D prevents cancer).
Breastfeed.
Being pregnant helps too :)
De stress  (meditate, yoga etc...)
Stay slim (body-fat holds toxins that can accelerate and promote  cancer growth).

Healthy lifestyle choices can set a president of strong immunity and prevent cancer and other illnesses for many generations to come. Especially if those healthy choices are continued generation after generation. Cancer will usually manifest in our most vulnerable body parts, hence breast cancer for women, prostate for men , lung cancer for smokers etc.. so we need to stay as  healthy as possible. Especially if our heredity is less than exemplar.

FDA warns against infant sleep aid.
The FDA says parents should stop using infant sleep positioners to prevent suffocation of 0 - 4 month old's. Advise is to only place babies on their backs in bed with a firm mattress covered with a fitted sheet to reduce the risk of SIDS. No soft bedding, bumper pads, pillows or stuffed animals.

The better twin?.
... apparently sex hormones makes a difference in mental development in twins. Psychological Science said that in visual rotation test, a male twin does best from an opposite sex pair, males from same sex pair scored a tad lower, females from opposite sex pair lower and female twins from same sex pair scored the lowest.  Scientists concluded testosterone is the culprit, but environmental difference may be at play.
So again, nutrition, exercise and other good habits during pregnancy and after as well as nursing will make a difference.

Yet more on Vitamin D: A study this month from the CDC stating that "virtually all babies need a vitamin D supplement" as both breast-milk and formula doesn't have enough vitamin D. Since weather may not always allow time outside and brand new infants are not recommended to be in direct sunlight, an extra vitamin D supplement may become necessary.
And the Medical University of South Carolina presented a study showing pregnant women should take 4000 IU's of vitamin D every day. Studying pregnant women taking 400, 2000 and 4000 iu's of D, the more they took the higher the moms and babies vitamin D levels were, and the less chance of infection preterm labor and birth.

vFlue vaccines banned for kids
Australia bans flu vaccines for kids after vomiting, fevers and seizures. With winter and flu season under way "down-under", children after getting a flu shot went into convulsions, others high fevers, and one is still in a coma. It was banned for kids, but not adults....? The Australian manufacturer CSL Ltd. claims it's due to a "weakened virus"....? But only a chemical can cause seizures. Most likely an highly inflammatory "adjuvant" chemical (chemical added to aggravate the immune system), that may damage brain and nervous system.   Yet this very flue vaccine will be injected to Americans of all ages 6 months & up, including pregnant moms....come fall.... recommended by the FDA as safe..?
Sort of the way they swear these vaccines do not cause neurological problems, miscarriages or autism... If an herbal product caused ONE seizure it would be taken off the market.  Yet, instead they will just "re-label" this vaccine once it gets here. And the FDA has ordered the company to start a study on this vaccine in children....? Which brings the question: Weren't' they supposed to study it before they approved it? So much for that expensive R&D. Keep in mind 45% of a drug companies budget goes to marketing...only 14% to R&D.
Last years Swine or H1N1 flu scare proved false. Fewer got that flu than normal flu strains. Deaths from swine flu was minimal compared with regular flu. Those with regular flu shots were more likely to get swine flu... and it turned out, executives at the WHO were being paid off by vaccine companies... to exaggerate the scare.

Prevent the flu naturally.
The flu appears in winter due a sever lack of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiencies cause paralyzation of the immune system. Stocking up on Vitamin D during the summer months and taking Vitamin D supplements in winter, could prevent the flu outright. Canada hands out vitamin D for flu prevention.

Japans Jikei University School of Medicine in Tokyo just published a study that vitamin D supplements is more effective at reducing the risk of flu than vaccines or antiviral drugs. Every bodily tissue has receptors for vitamin D. Deficiencies of D contribute to higher risk of osteoporosis, depression, cancers, hypertension, diabetes, MS, autoimmune disorders, infections, arthritis and mental problems.
Early humans evolved near the equator, with intense sun exposure and minimal clothing. -"As a species, we do not get as much sun exposure as we used to, and dietary sources of vitamin D are minimal".  says Dr. E. Giovannucci, nutrition researcher at Harvard U.
The main food source of natural D, is wild caught oily fish. The darker a person is, the more sun they need.  White people may only need 10 minutes a day, but black skin persons may need up to 30-45 minutes a day of "unblocked" sun exposure during summer to stock up for winter. Unfortunately, "sun-phobia", sunblock, infants exclusively breastfed and kept indoors,  and elderly in nursing homes are contributing to D deficiencies and therefor higher flu and disease levels. 95% of new infants are deficient, but only 1% get vitamin D supplements in the US. In Europe, infants are routinely given vitamin D drops for up to 5 years to ensure health. A Finish study gave newborns 2000 iu's vitamin D and Type 1 Diabetes fell by 88%. A CDC study found 36% of mothers deficient, and even 30% of those who took prenatal supplements were vitamin D deficient (most supplements lack enough vitamin D).

Flu Prevention by Immune building:

  1. Sunshine exposure daily, or stock up sufficiently in summer.
  2. Take vitamin D3 supplements at least in winter.
  3. Eat oily wild caught fish.
  4. Exercise
  5. Eat healthy, natural foods and produce, avoiding all soda, processed & fried foods.
  6. Take good complete multi-vitamins and pro-biotics.
  7. Do not smoke or use drugs/medications if possible.
  8. Brush and floss teeth daily for healthy gums.
  9. Wash your hands often in hot soapy water.
  10. Avoid touching all public hardware (door handles, elevator buttons, faucets, etc....). Use a scarf or tissue.
  11. Stay away from sick people.
  12. If you get sick, stay at home, sleep, drink lots of fluids (tea, water, soup), take extra vitamin C, E, and D, (and olive leaf extract if not pregnant).
This works; last year, I was personally exposed to 3  people with the H1N1 flu + several with regular flu and never fell ill. I was not blessed with a strong immune system, but take very good care of it.

Drinking Soda Harms Sperm
A Danish study at the Copenhagen University Hospital published in American Journal of Epidemiology showed that men who drink a liter of cola a day have lower sperm counts than those who don't. The test included tea and coffee which had little effect on sperm, ruling out Caffeine as the culprit. It is more likely the Phosphorous that is also known to damage bone, muscles and other organ tissue as well. Lest not forget cola is used like acid to clean rusty, oily truck engines and the street after bad auto accidents.
India in 2006 banned cola drinks determining them too 'dangerous for human consumption'.  Venezuela just banned Coke Zero for same reason. Regular soda has been shown to cause diabetes both generally and in pregnant women, and diet cola is no better as aspartame may cause mental confusion and tumors, and saccharine causes birth defects. These artificial sweeteners also mess with your metabolism.

WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK

nursingAugust 1-7, 2010 is World Breastfeeding Week (WBW).  Breastfeeding groups worldwide utilize the week to promote the importance of breastfeeding and to celebrate the signing of the Innocenti Declaration on the Protection, Promotion and Support of Breastfeeding.  The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is currently featuring a series of videos, "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding."http://www.worldbreastfeedingweek.org

The International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) focuses on the steps to breastfeeding success outlined in the Baby-Friendly™ Hospital Initiative, http://www.ilca.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3306.  La Leche League (LLL) USA has been hosting celebrations for the past several months, and leading up to the week http://www.lllusa.org/wbw/index.php.

And according to the World Health Org, "Breastfeeding should continue for up to two years of age or beyond,"

The benefits of breastfeeding for both infant health and the mother-infant relationship are well-established, and the majority of human cultures throughout history have breast-fed past the age of one. Unfortunately this is not often practiced or possible. But just one feeding a day after 6 months, may only constitute 20% of child's total caloric intake but will constitute 90% of it's nutrition. That's how amazing breast milk is.

Keep in mind that breast milk is only as healthy & safe as you make it. Eating healthy, taking your vitamins, exercising and avoiding all things chemicals, drugs, cigarettes and alcohol is vital. Make your baby the healthiest possible.

Carbo Load for Baby

jakepoolCarbs trigger serotonin release in brain which helps for better recovery, stamina, speed, cognition, attention span and concentration, according to a Yale School of Medicine study on US special Forces at Fort Bragg NC. So, carbohydrates may help lift that "pregnancy-fog" somewhat.
In related news from India, eating garlic and onion with whole grain carbs, absorption of Iron improves 70% and Zinc absorption improves 160%. This could be very important to "moms-to-be" as 30% of us are deficient in both. And both Iron and Zinc are crucial to a healthy baby.

Turmeric

India seems to be onto something.... Turmeric, (Curcumin) that orange colored ginger looking spice in curry and mustard has been found to be anti-inflammatory, and prevent depression, cognitive decline,  and safe-guarding the brain. It's commonly used in India for colds and may help diabetes. All very helpful qualities to pregnant and nursing moms. The Curcumin nutrient, just like Lycophene in Tomatoes is best absorbed when cooked with lipids like olive oil or butter.

Better Birth Options

New guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists say that women who have had two previous C-sections or are carrying twins are appropriate candidates for vaginal birth after cesarean, known as a VBAC.

But because of the risks, the guidelines still recommend that patients trying for a labor delivery do so in hospitals that can immediately provide emergency care.

After years of disagreements, and US birth rates via C-section having increased from 5% in 1970 to 33% today, this will be welcome news to women wanting vaginal deliveries and babies avoiding many health problems associated with C-sections.

Matching hearts.

Natural News  recently reported from a BBC News report that the heartbeats of unborn babies synchronize with the heartbeats of their mothers when the mothers breathe rhythmically. The University of Aberdeen study say that this finding will help doctors be better able to detect developmental problems during pregnancy.

Antibiotics during pregnancy:

3.23.10 - Taking antibiotics during pregnancy can increase the risk of birth defects, according to a study by the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities and published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

About 30 percent of women take at least one antibiotic between three months before conception and the date of delivery, despite that many of the drugs have not been extensively tested for their safety on developing infants.

18,000 women participated in study that showed that the antibiotics most strongly linked with birth defect risk were the nitrofurantoin and sulfonamide ( "sulfa") families, including the brand-name drugs Bactrim, Furadantin, Macrobid, Macrodantin and Septra.

Children were born with fatal skull and brain malformation, respiratory problems such as blocked nasal passages (choanal atresia) and abnormal diaphragm openings (diaphragmatic hernia); heart defects such as an abnormally narrow (coarctated) aorta or underdeveloped left side of the heart (hypoplastic left heart syndrome); and shortened or missing limb bones (transverse limb deficiency), cleft lip or palate, congenital heart defects, eye defects and being born missing one or both eyes (anophthalmia). Folate vs. Folic Acid: Benefits and risks.
January 9th, 2010.
Appropriately, the first week and month of the New Year begins with Folic Acid and birth defect awareness. Folic Acid being the most famous anti-birth defect vitamin in the B family.  However, there is confusion and misunderstanding about this vitamin, its benefits and risks.
This awareness week should be renamed FOLATE WEEK. continued here

What is driving the US premature delivery rate up? $$$?

Nov 18/2009 - I wrote an article last week for Huffington Post on my outrage of the drug/medical/preemie industry not promoting prevention of premature birth, only "helping" moms be aware of symptoms, but not helping to prevent them in the first place.......as less preemies would reduce their business….this article went viral, Arianna Huffington put it on her hottest list of the day and Google made it the number ONE blog on pregnancy for the day.
Here is the article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/birgitta-lauren/what-is-driving-the-surge_b_353287.html

My humble thanks for the great kudos i recieved from Dr. Jay Gordon, Los Angeles number one natural pediatrician http://www.drjaygordon.com, and Mary Harris MD, Professor & DPD Director @ Colorado State U. www.cahs.colostate.edu

Premature delivery is preventable in 70-80 % of cases by moms leading a healtheir life. The US rate is 2.5 times that of Europe and Asia. We can reduce our rate to the same as theirs, but women must change their unhealhty lifestyle choices. It comes down to healtheir food, more exercise and less chemicals.

CARNITINE SUPPLEMENTS IN PREGNANCY REDUCES ITS DECLINE. L-Carnitine, a vitamin-like amino-acid, occurs naturally in the human body and is essential for turning fat into energy. It is often used by physically active people to help with post-exercise recovery. Levels of carnitine decrease during pregnancy, while the reason is unknown, it may be due to an inadequate iron status in the women.
The reduction of carnitine starts after the 12th week of gestation to term. This reduction was prevented by the supplementation of carnitine. “We’re glad to be the first to show that even with a daily dose of 500 mg L-Carnitine the low plasma levels can be restored in pregnant women,” said lead researcher Professor Klaus Eder from Martin-Luther University in Germany. Carnitine helps cardiovascular health and weight management.
estoring plasma levels of carnitine via supplementation during pregnancy may also help prevent the development of gestational diabetes, especially in overweight women, by decreasing elevated plasma free fatty acids.

500 MG OF OMEGA FATTY ACIDS IS NEEDED FOR HEART HEALTH “Compelling evidence” from studies involving almost 40,000 participants supports daily EPA plus DHA intakes of at least 500 mg per day for healthy individuals, while people with known heart disease or heart failure should aim for up to 1,000 mg daily, according to a review published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The EFSA (Europe's version of the FDA) will start recommending these levels for heart health. Supplementing 500 mg of omega fatty acids from EPA and DHA could thus have a very positive effect on preventing gestational heart conditions like hypertension and preeclampsia. http://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/content/view/print/255398 Healthy Baby Vitamins contain 1000mg of omega EPA/DHA

07/16/09 New studies are showing:

Omega Fatty Acid consumption seems to reduce dementia. It’s the “neuroprotective actions of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids commonly found in fish” says UK researchers.

Fish oil supplementation during  pregnancy and nursing  also reduces food allergies and eczema in children by 20%.

Fruits & vegetables can improve sperm quality. The anti oxidants make healthier sperm says spanish reserachers.

Dad's genes have been found to have a bigger role than previously thought in the health of babies.

Work stress for mom may harm her baby causing early delivery and low birth weight. Moms can prevent this by slowing and cutting down their work load, perhaps working from home and if possible quitting work 6-8 weeks prior to due date.

C-section stress may alter baby's immune cells increasing risk for diabetes, asthma, leukemia and other immunilogical diseases. C-sections changes the DNA of white blood cells according to Swedish reserach. C-section babies are unprepared for the birth in comparison to a vaginal delivery which gradually builds up the "workout" of baby traveling through the birth canal, helping baby start breathing and better adapt to the outside environment.

Acupuncture may help prevent heart burn while pregnant.

BPA chemicals in plastic may be more harmful than already thought. especially for pregnant women and their babies. It's been linked to cancer , diabetes, heart disease, a childs' developmental problems, fetal birth defects, as well as fertility by changing the DNA code for pregnancy, Women should avoid drinking out of hard plastic water bottles, eating out plastic vessels, tin cans and not get dental work with sealants. Other items with BPA's are sunglasses, and CD's.

Breast feeding improves a child's school performance, higher GPA and college attendance.

Postpartum stress and depression may delay puberty in daughters. Prevent PPD with exercise, and optimum nutrition. Getting enough omega fatty acids, vitamin B's and vitamin D from sunshine is crucial to help moms moods.

How Moms Can Mold the Health of Their Babies.

Epigenetic scientists have discovered that moms while pregnant can with their diets and lifestyle mold the health of their babies. The FASEB Journal published a study proving that we are what our mothers ate, or didn't eat while pregnant. Genes can be modified by the environment (mom's lifestyle). Rat fetuses receiving poor nutrition grew to be smaller and at higher risk for diabetes, growth retardation, cardiovascular disease, obesity and neuro-developmental delays etc.... These maternal - fetal health findings are seen to influence many health care issues through several generations. So what mom does will affect not just her immediate offspring but also future generation's genetic make-up and therefore tendencies for various health problems. Reiterating what I have been preaching for 18 years, editor -in-chief of The FASEB Journal, Gerald Weissman, MD. , says: "The jury's in and, yes, expectant moms really are eating for two. This study shows not only that we need to address problems such as preeclampsia during pregnancy, but also that prenatal care is far more important than anyone could have imagined a decade ago." Good or bad genes can be turned on or off depending on mom's lifestyle. Most health related genes are not set in stone, they can be altered and once a baby is born, they can be further modified in good or bad ways depending on the child's lifestyle.
In a related study, from University College Dublin and the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin, high GI or high sugar food consumption, like white bread and chocolate in late pregnancy increases obesity risks in children. The study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology mentions that though much of the work against childhood obesity have been focused on the food eaten by children, we need to also focus on the diet and exercise habits of the mothers themselves.

momnbaby
So moms, the healthier you eat and exercise before and during pregnancy and nursing will shape the future health of your baby and grand children. "What happens in the womb doesn't stay in womb." Make it a happy, healthy place for your child to grow, by eating only healthy natural foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and lean meats, poultry and especially fish, drink lots of water, avoid all things fried, processed and white (boxed and canned foods, soda, white bread, pasta, rice and sugar), take a great prenatal supplement and exercise 3-5 days a week. By getting every crucial nutrient, you can even avert possible toxic effects of carcinogens, BPA and Mercury. Various B vitamins and Selenium are good at this. Continuing this and nursing, once your healthy baby is born, you will be role model for your child that will continue eating well and exercise as our habits and tastes are formed when so very young.

"How the Sunshine Vitamin D makes for Healthier, Happier and Leaner babies".

February 2009:

Omega-3 fatty acids may protect against obesity and diabetes.
"Our study shows for the first time that lipids called protectins and resolvins derived from omega-3 fatty acids can actually reduce the instance of liver complications, such as hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance, in obese people," said researcher Joan Claria from the University of Barcelona, Spain. The study, published in The FASEB Journal, confirms previous studies that have implicated omega-3 in protective benefits against both obesity and diabetes, and the new study adds to this growing body of evidence.

A considerable number of studies already support the benefits of the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5 n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3) for cardiovascular health, and cognitive health. Other areas of potential for the fatty acids include mood and behavior, eye health, cancer risk reduction, and improved infant development. Pregnant women consuming additional fish and omega supplements with EPA and DHA could potentially help prevent the gestational complications of diabetes.

With new Danish/American studies showing that women suffering from preeclampsia during pregnancy have higher risks later for hypertension, diabetes and blood clots, theoretically, perhaps better consumption of DHA/EPA Omega – 3 fish oil during pregnancy could reduce the incidence of preeclampsia?    Preeclampsia is a life-threatening cardiovascular disease where the only cure is to deliver the baby. However, in my experience, a mom may with increased daily exercise and proper diet prevent preeclampsia even when she notices her blood pressure starting to creep up.

How safe are Infant Formulas?
The FDA recently announced that they will allow the chemical Melamine in Baby Formulas a month after they announced it was not safe. The FDA found trace amounts of the chemical Melamine (which has caused havoc in Asia sickening and killing pets and children) in 2 products: Nestle’s Good Start Supreme Infant formula with iron, and traces of cyanuric acid in Infamil Formula Powder, Enfamil LIPIL with Iron from Mead Johnson Nutritionals (Bristol Myers Squibb Pharmaceuticals). Both companies deny such findings in their own tests. The FDA now concludes that this does “not raise public health concerns.”

In addition, reading ingredient labels of some infant formula products like Similac,  you may also find “high fructose corn syrup” , as high as the second ingredient. Corn syrup has been found to severely increase risk of heart disease, obesity and diabetes in children and adults. This could potentially be setting up children for these diseases from day one. Unfortunatly a new Irish study has found that 61 per cent of males and 40 per cent of females never read the nutrition label before purchase, which may lead to uneducated purchases.. To make matters worse the Journal Environmental Health say in a study that mercury has been found in 50% of the US supply of High Fructose Corn Syrup. The US institute for Agriculture and Trade Police also claims to have found mercury in 30% of foods with HFCS as the first or second ingredient.

In addition formula companies are adding DHA and ARA’s to some formulas, from “plant sources” and promoting them as …”supporting eye development like the breastfed infants”.   This is a cause of concern as a): these “plant sourced” DHA’s are extracted from fungus and algae via a process requiring the use of the neurotoxin chemical Hexane (a byproduct of petroleum refinement), This according to the Cornucopia institute is causing some babies to suffer from liver, kidney problems and / or diahrrea, other long term effects are unknown, b): proper fetal, and infant visual and brain development needs DHA and EPA’s in the natural balance it’s found in fish, EPA's can not be man-made nor extracted (yet) c): man has never been able to exactly replicate the nutritional qualities and intricases of breast milk.

Early Elelctive C-sections Cause complications for mom and baby.
Babies born at 37 weeks have twice the comlications of babies born at or after 39 weeks. Everything from breathing problems, infections, low blood sugar, nursing problems to morbidity is doubled. ACOG is recommending that except in the case of medical emergencies, no C-section be performed before 39 weeks of gestation. Schedules, convenience and vanity reasons needs to be put aside for the sake of the baby.

January 2009:

Just as January's Birth Defect Prevention month kicks in the FDA finds more melamine in infant formulas. Of the 89 products tested, postive results for melamine were found in: Enfamil with Iron, Emphamil Lipil with Iron, and Nestle Good Start Supreme with Iron. Melamine is toxic chemical used by Chinese manufacturers to fake a higher protein content of a food. Why? it's less expensive than using real protein.

3rd - hand smoke dangerous. Mass General Hospital for Children in Boston has coined third-hand smoke to describe the carcinogenic and toxic effects of inhaling smoke particles that inbed themselves into clothing and furnishings long after the smoke is gone. Especially for children and infants inhaling particles from a persons clothing, a sofa or in a car.

BPA plastics chemical pose sever risks. THe Peninsula Medical School in the UK found that people with cardiovascular disease and diabetes have higher levels of BPA in their urine. a major concern is infants as they are expsoed to BPA from premixed liquid formula and plastic baby bottles. Another study by American Society for Reproductive Medicine found that BPA's may inhibit fertility in those women undergoing IVF treatment. Infertility may also be linked with GM (genetcially moidfied) corn according to the Austrian Ministry of Health , Family and Youth that looked at GM corn by Monsanto, a US manufacturer.

December 2008:

Vitamin D Protects Placenta.
December being the darkest month of the year highlights the issue and problems of sever vitamin D deficiency in this country. More than half of us are vitamin D deficient. More so in winter since the best source of D is sun exposure. Pregnant women and their unborn babies being the most vulnerable. Now Martin Hewison, a researcher at UCLA has found that the active form of vitamin D (1,25) may play a key role in placental innate immunity protecting the placenta from infection. we further postulate that improvement of maternal vitamin D status through dietary supplementation may act to potentiate placental innate immune responses during pregnancy. says Hewison.
There are vitamin D2 and D3, the later being more bio active and produced in the skin from sun exposure. Hewison infected cells with E. coli which after vitamin D3 exposure reduced in number and also showed a reduction in cell death. 18 scientists from UC are now recommending that daily intakes of vitamin D be increased to 2000 IU's from 200 IU's.
With vitamin D also playing a big part in diabetes, bone and joint health according the The Journal of Pediatrics and evidence from John Hopkins University showing that vitamin D deficiency increases death risk by 26% it is vital for moms to get enough vitamin D3. 10-15 minutes of sunlight a day to any body part not slathered in UV protection lotion is all lighter skinned people need . Darker skin needs up to 40 minutes a day. But with dark winter days, getting your daily dose of "rays" may be difficult making supplementation important. In Sweden newborn infants are mandatorily given vitamin A&D drops daily from birth for at least 2 up to 5 years to prevent rickets and other bone diseases from the sever lack of sunshine in the Swedish northern climate from October through March.

With Christmas and Hanukha time here, please be careful with your sugar intake. Gestational Diabetes is preventable for most with preferably a complete avoidance of sugar and white carbohydrates by pregnant women. Exercise is also an important tool.

Folic Acid in early pregnancy may lead to wheezing in baby.
Moms taking folic acid supplements during the first 3 months of pregnancy may increase hospitalization of ther babies with respiratory infections. A Norwegian study published in the British Medical Journal's Archives of Diseases in Child hood, found increases in wheezing, infection and hospitalization from folic acid supplements in the first trimester. Siri Haber from the Norwegian Insitute of Public Health theorizes that folic acid, the synthetic form of Folate; influence the risk of airway inflammation. This finding could implicate the US and Canadian food fortification with Folic acid. Folic acid has since the fortification started reduced spina bifida and anencephaly in infants about 30%. However, the researchers said that Synthetic folic acid, the most commonly used Folate form in supplements, is dfferent from Folates in food, and may act differently than natural occurring Folates - ...regular intake of folic acid supplements will in many subjects result in acumulating un-metabolized folic acid, which may have possible effects on immune cells. Natural Folate is found in some higher quality supplements, green leafy vegetables, almonds, grains, chick peas, lentils and strawberries.

Wild Blueberries take the anti oxidant trophy.
In a fruit study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, wild blueberries were found to have the highest amount of antioxidants of all fruit. Pomegranates, black berries, raspberries and cranberries came in under wild blueberries as did farmed blueberries. All way above apples. Though apples and strawberries are the most commonly consumed fruits and the highest suppliers of Phenols in the American diet. Melons and bananas had the least amount of anti oxidants. Trendy super fruits like noni, acai and goje were not included in the study.

US get a D in premature birth rate.
The March of Dimes is now annually scoring on the prematurity rate that has sky-rocketed due to later motherhood, multiple births, and increased C-sections. In 2005 our premature delivery rate rose to 12.7%. Premature infants are at higher risk for death in the first year, breathing, feeding problems, hemorrhage, gastrointestinal problems, and infections like pneumonia and meningitis. Cerebral palsy, vision, hearing loss, learning and behavioral problems are also seen.
Reproductive assistance, resulting in multiple's increases premature risk, but the biggest problem is elective C-sections. The US C-section rate is much higher than Europe's. Ironically it's our lifesaving technology for preterm infants that have many OB's feeling that delivering a baby prematurely for minor difficulties and keeping the infant in a neonatal intensive care unit is better than keeping the baby in the womb as long as possible. Dr. Alan Fleishman, medical director for the March of Dimes says that Getting to term should be the goal. We don't want to stop one medically needed early delivery, but many elective inductions would benefit from more careful consideration He also believes other factors as playing a role in prematurity rate, such as infections, poor prenatal care and stress, especially financial stress and abusive relationships.

.Elepahnt for Halloween
It is not just sugar in Halloween candy that may send kids into hyperactivity, low and high mood swings. The colorings and preservatives in candy (and any other processed foods) are also a major culprit. A Southampton UK study published in the Lancet reported that the colors blue, green, yellow, orange and red  do exacerbate hyperactivity and moods. Europe's FSA is now considering banning these food colorings.  Even our FDA, whose website says these are safe, is reviewing a petition from the Center of Science in the Public Interest for a ban on 8 food colors in processed foods. However, even our fruits, like oranges can have their skin colored by a red color (not considered for banning) to make them look more "appealing". Other studies published in 2003 by the Journal of Archives of Disease in Childhood found that preservatives and colors in foods increased hyperactivity and as soon as these additives were removed, the children’s mood and behavior were substantially improved. Eating foods with additives while pregnant could set a child up for problems later on in addition to affecting mom’s moods that may already be affected by pregnancy hormones.  Besides, candy has no nutrient value for you or your baby and will only pad your hips and ruin your gums. The best use for Halloween candy is for decorational purposes only.

It is very important for pregnant moms to keep their moods as stable as possible. Depression during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery and postpartum depression. This condition is very preventable with sun, exercise and proper nutrition. As important as exercise is to help moods, nutrition is crucial.
Moms must avoid processed foods, white carbohydrates and ensure to eat plenty of fish and supplement with omega fatty acids, B vitamins, and vitamin D (or sunshine) to avoid mood swings. Green tea may also help mom’s moods as it contains L-theanine, which is known to relax the brain according to New Zealand research. Omega Fatty acids can be obtained from oily fish (safest fish are: wild salmon, herring, sardines, trout and pollock) , flax seed oil, nuts and seeds. Almonds and walnuts are excellent.
However, fatty acids from fish are the easiest to absorb. Vitamin D (especially that from a little sunshine exposure) is vital for a happy mood now that winter and darker days are approaching. Vitamin D is also linked to stronger bones, breast and skin cancer and infection protection.
Prevention is always your best bet, but if you find yourself depressed, first improve your lifestyle to include the above, then add talk therapy as needed and hopefully you will never need medications which are not safe for you or your baby. SSRI's (anti-depressants) can increase odds of low birth-weight, premature delivery, diabetes, suicide, congenital heart defects, and pulmonary problems in babies, and should be your absolute last resort if at all since nutrition and exercise has shown in studies to work as well, and better without the side effects.
Another good reason to avoid premature labor, is that t he anti-biotic given to women during preterm labor is now shown to increase the risk of Cerebral Palsy in the children. These anti-biotic are given to prolong gestation, but in absence of any infection and ruptured membranes, it may do more harm than good, says Dr. Jennifer Wu @ Lenox Hill Hospital in NY City. Gestation is rarely prolonged more than 48 hours. However, infection is usually the cause of preterm labor. Staying fit and healthy is your best bet for staying pregnant through 40 weeks. For more information on signs and symptoms of preterm labor go to the March of Dimes.

Flying with Baby? jet
If you are flying with a small baby during the holiday season coming up here are a few tips to help your little one stay comfortable and quiet:
Feeding babies as the swallowing pops their ears, burping them also pops their ears. Holding a baby upright, rocking baby or providing something fun to look at. An older child can chew gum.
Psychologist Susan Bartell considers crying babies on planes "bad parenting" from a lack of effort in soothing baby and advises to pace the isle with baby.
Dr. Tanya Altman, author of "Mommy Calls" advises to feed baby during takeoff and landing right before attendants are called for seating.
The old-fashioned ways include dipping your little finger into a glass of wine or cognac and letting baby suck on your finger once only. The sucking would pop baby's ears and the alcohol would put baby to sleep.

spniabifidaOctober is Spina Bifida Awareness Month.

anachephely*Spina bifida, literally means “cleft spine,” and is characterized by the incomplete development of the brain, spinal cord, and/or meninges (the protective covering around the brain and spinal cord).

Spina Bifida* and anencephaly are a sever forms of birth defects that has since food
fortification of Folic acid in the US dropped about 30%. *Spina bifida, literally means “cleft spine,” and is characterized by the incomplete development of the brain, spinal cord, and/or meninges (the protective covering around the brain and spinal cord). Folate, the natural form of this vitamin is found in green leafy vegetables, brewers yeast, lentils and liver. Unfortunately, Americans are still lacking in this B vitamin and many are not aware of how important Folate supplementation is in birth defect prevention. The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) and the national Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (HMHB) is spearheading new education. There has however, been shown that food fortification of the synthetic Folic Acid is causing gene mutations in embryos leading to disease and some cancers in the general population. This makes the case more important to consume supplements with natural Folate in a comprehensive multivitamin. Folate works with vitamin B12 and C to utilize protein and is necessary for red-blood-cell formations which carry oxygen through the blood to our bodies and a growing baby in utero. Folate also forms nucleic acid, which is vital for growth and reproduction of all body cells. Folate is crucial for brain function, mental and emotional health, proper appetite and helps prevent food poisoning. It is sadly the most deficient nutrient in our diets as it’s easily destroyed by light and high temperatures, or even when food is left out for too long. Especially pregnant women lack Folate. Pregnant women need 800 mcg daily. A deficiency can lead to anemia, irritability, forgetfulness, mental sluggishness, cancer, damaged blood vessels, blood clotting, cholesterol, cardiovascular, neurological, skeletal, digestive problems, and while pregnant, to mentally retarded children, spina bifida birth defects, cleft palate, brain damage and poor learning abilities in a child. Other problems during pregnancy of Folate deficiency are preeclampsia, premature birth, after birth hemorrhaging and anemia in both mom and child. Alcohol, oral contraceptives and anti-convulsants interferes with Folate absorption. Folate can also help with diarrhea, ulcers, menstrual problems atherosclerosis, fatigue, forgetfulness and graying hair. Most supplements are made of Folic Acid the synthetic form of Folate (naturally occurring in foods). Folic acid is NOT bioactive and must be converted by our intestines before it can be used. 25% of people have reduced ability to convert Folic acid and un-metabolized Folic Acid can be stored in cells, inhibiting Folate dependent functions. Unlike Folic Acid, natural occurring Folates require no transformations to be absorbed and used by the body. The B vitamin Choline is also vital in working with Folate to prevent birth defects such as Spina Bifida and to improve neurological development in unborn babies. Choline also helps Omega Fatty acid absorption. Actually all B vitamins; B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, B15, Biotin, Choline, Folate, Inositol, and PABA work so closely together and must therefore be taken together. Supplementing with one or just a few (such as the synthetic prescription prenatals and most prenatals - read labels before purchase) makes them either useless or can cause a deficiency in others by throwing off the balance. A high dose of one can deplete the others. Because of B vitamins metabolic function, they should be taken on a full stomach. According to studies and the FDA, taking prenatal vitamins 12 months before conception offers the best protection.

Vitamin B deficiency has recently been shown in 2 new studies, to also cause cognitive impairment and B12 deficiency in particular leading to brain shrinkage. B12 deficiency is usually caused by a vegan diet as B12 is not found in any plant foods, only in animal protein. these studies were published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the Journal of Neurology respectively.

sugarcookiesKids could be over-exposed to melamineTDI via Chinese foods.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) are afraid that children globally could be exposed to 3 times the safe melamine levels through eating chocolate and biscuits made in China. Just as infants have been throughout the Austral/Asia area, via infant food milk powder. Milk powder is present in most processed carbohydrate foods, from candy to cookies and cereal and even protein bars. Investigations so far show that melamine was added to milkpowder to mask that it had been watered down to fake a good protein content (melamine and protein both have high nitrogen content which is how protein levels are measured in foods). Its advisable to read foodlabels and know where they are from. Cadbury has just recalled all their chocolates made in China.

California broadens chemical control.
CA can now regulate and ban toxic chemicals in our products such as lead in jewelry, and mercury in thermometers . THe chemcials to most targeted are: Pthaltes in plastics such as baby bottles (endocrine disruptors, reproduction problems), PBD's in elextronics and furniture(neurotoxins affecting congnition), Lead in electronics, pipes, and paint (neurotoxin), Bisphenol in canned foods, water bottles, infant food containers (neurotoxin causing cancer, heart disease, diabetes), Arsenic in electronics (carcinogen), and Mercury in those new twisty light bulbs and some electronics (neurotoxin).

shotFlu shot or Not?
In an article in the LA Times this week, many parents are questioning flu shots, for various reasons. flu shots may be inexpensive but many are not convinced of their safety or effectivness. Parents wants to do what they think is best for their children and are concerned with mercury content. Despite some mercury free vaccines parents are still wary of possible toxic side effects that could have neurologal consequenses. They prefer to prevent the flu naturally. There are many ways to do so: wash, wash and wash your hands, eating only nautral un-processed foods, regular exercise, taking comprehensive multi vitamins, eating garlic, lots of vitamin C, staying positive, staying away from sick people, not touching public surfaces with your skin (elevator buttons, door handles, toilet flushers, gas pump handles etc...) and some even swear that massages and taking cold showers help. The Neti pot is also popular for sinus problems. And in a perfect world every sick child should stay home from school and day care. The most vulnerable people in our society to exposure of toxins are those most targeted for flu shots, those being small children, pregnant women and the elderly. A new study blows away all the myths, and hype of the flu shot pushers: It says giving flu shots to the elderly results in zero reduction in their risk of death. In reality, it doesn't even prevent them from catching the flu. Even worse, it makes their immune systems more vulnerable to future infections. Especially since the infulenza virus changes every year and the vaccines strains can be pure guess work. The fact is that between 1976 , before flu vaccines, and 1999, deaths from the flu quadrupled.

No Money, No Boys. The stress that money troubles from a slower economy and natural disasters like Hurricane Gustav can cause can affect the birthing sex ratio according to new research. Difficult times and stress causes in increase in miscarriages, premature birth and other problems including less baby boys being born. Professor Catalano at UC Berkley, says male fetuses are more likely to miscarry or be born prematurely. As the male sperm and fetus is weaker in general to the female sperm and fetus, that is plausible. There are already more male conceptions but more girls that make it through a pregnancy and the first year of life. This because the male sperm is faster than female sperm and reaches an egg faster. But if there is no egg yet, male sperm dies off and the female slow-but-steady sperm will reach an egg later. Historical research going back to the cave times, have also pondered whether more girls are born in bad times to ensure the continuation of our species as only females can carry children. And wether boys are more plentiful in better times as they are better hunter&gatherers or "breadwinners when there is plenty to hunt & gather for. This phenomenon apparently also translates into the animal world.

Americans deficient in vitamin B6. Scientist at Tuft's University in a very large study published May 2008, found that specifically women of childbearing age and especially those that smoke and are using or having used oral contraceptives to have the largest B6 deficiency. 75% of women age 13-54 using contraceptives and not taking a nutritional supplement were very deficient. Even 11% of those that do take supplements were deficient. This can happen with inferior and incomplete supplements. Vitamin B6 works together or synergistically, with all other vitamins. An incomplete or uneven formula would disrupt the body's proper nutrient balance. Especially the B vitamins . B6 works with iron to make hemoglobin (these red blood cells transport oxygen to a growing baby). A deficiency can develop anemia, impair calcium and magnesium absorption and the conversion of B3 into tryptophan and serotonin production. As well as many other hormones vital to a healthy pregnancy. Early symptoms of a B6 deficiency is depression, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction. So before anyone start using prescriptive anti-depressants (with their side effects on a developing or nursing baby), your B6 levels should be checked first along with omega fatty acids. Other symptoms are impaired metabolism, and mouth sores. But a sever deficiency can also lead to heart disease and cancer and lowers yours immune system. The resulting side-effects on a growing baby from a B6 deficiency during pregnancy can be detrimental.

July means full on summer and time to enjoy all of what summer gives us; a more relaxing blueberriesschedule for de-stressing, a little sunshine for some very important vitamin D, summer fruits like berries and peaches, nectarines and melons (full of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants,hyponitrites), refreshing salads. As berries and peaches are more likely to absorb pesticides, make sure to only buy organic ones. But don't forget to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Dehydration is a major cause of premature delivery. Be careful with bottled water, and do not drink out of a plastic bottle that has been in a hot car or reuse plastic bottles as bisphenols (BPA) can leach into the water. although by taking your Folate in your prenatal vitamins you can prevent toxic effects of bisphenols.

Mom's vitamin D during pregnancy strengthens kid's teeth says researchers from University of Manitoba, Canada. "This study shows for the first time that maternal vitamin-D levels may have an influence on the primary dentition and the development of early-childhood-caries," wrote Robert Schroth. Vitamin D is produced in the body on exposure to sunlight. but only 15 minutes a day for light skinned people and 45 minutes for dark skinned people is enough. Excessive sun exposure can cause skin cancer. And with dietary sources of vitamin D providing relatively low doses of vitamin D experts are recommending supplements. Healthy Baby prenatal AM and PM taken together offers more vitamin D than other prenatals.07/10/08

DHA improves children's brain power, according to a Martek BioScience study. Docosahexaenoid acid (DHA) or fish oil intake of 400 mg a day can increase mental capacity in pre-school children. we already know DHA are the building blocks of the brain and is vital during pregnancy and infancy, but this study extends that benefit through childhood. DHA is also linked to better heart, eye and skin health, like eczema. unfortunately most American children consume less than 30 mg of DHA a day. 06/30/08

SIDS linked to Brain CHemical Dysfunction. Italian researches found in an unrelated serotonin study on mice that a malfunction in the regulation of the brain chemical serotonin could be the cause of SIDS. Serotonin is a chemical that helps the brain communicate with nerve cells and the spinal cord and is important for heart rate, breathing and temperature regulation etc...Serotonin is affected by ones diet, nutritional intake, DHA, exercise habits, and babies can be affected by stomach sleeping and over-bundling or over heating. 07/03/08

June is Nutrition Awareness Month and this is National Men's Health Week.dad n mom
With Father's Day here, it's important to remember that dad's health habits are also very important when trying to conceive. Bad lifestyle habits and choices can make a big difference on a potential dad's sperm quantity and quality. Everything from nutrition, exercise (or lack of it) or type of exercise (excessive bicycling reduces sperm count), cell phone use, and past or present drug use or abuse, and chemical exposures can all have an impact on fertility and the future health of a baby. Go to www.menshealthweek.org for more info.nursing baby

Vitamin D supplementation needed during nursing.
Further studies published by the AMA are implicating that 40% of 8-24 month old infants do not have adequate Vitamin D levels, which can cause rickets. Nursing moms needs to supplement with extra vitamin D and make sure that both mom and baby gets their minimum of 15 minutes of sunshine every day (without sunscreen lotions) to improve vitamin D levels.

Trans fats consumption during nursing harms baby as well as mom.
The Journal of Nutrition published a study showing that lactating rats fed a trans fats had off spring with decreased heart function for glucose transportation and insulin sensitivities. Trans fats are used mostly in processed foods by the food industry for extended shelf life and flavor stability. But Trans fats do tremendous harm in raising LDL cholesterol (bad guys) and reducing the HDL cholesterol (good guys), which can lead to cardiovascular disease. it can also lead to metabolic syndrome and type-2 diabetes. Avoid processed foods, margarine, nut butters without oil on top etc..

candyArtificial colors linked to ADHD.
Just as in Europe, the FDA here in the states is finally being urged to ban artificial food colors that are linked to hyperactivity. A UK study published in the Lancet concluded that different artificial colors, and the preservative sodium benzoate bring on ADHD in children. The colors implicated are: Yellow 5, Red 40, Blue 1, green 3, orange B, red 3, and yellow 6.

Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is rich in a chemical called theo bromine, which stimulates the heart, relaxes smooth muscle and dilates blood vessels, and has been used to treat chest pain, high blood pressure, and hardening of the arteries.

Preeclampsia, in which blood pressure spikes during pregnancy while excess protein is released into the urine, has many features in common with heart disease.

Yale University looked at 2,291 women who delivered a single infant, and asked them about their chocolate consumption and tested levels of theobromine in infants' umbilical cord blood.

Women who consumed the most chocolate (five or more servings) and those whose infants had the highest concentration of theobromine in their cord blood were the least likely to develop preeclampsia. 69 percent were less likely to develop the complication than those in the lowest quarter.

Theobromine could improve circulation within the placenta while blocking oxidative stress, or it could also be a stand-in for other beneficial chemicals found in chocolate, Triche and her team note in the May issue of Epidemiology.

Previous reports have also shown that babies born to moms who ate chocolate were “happier” than other kids.

This could be due to flavinoids improving blood flow and hormones.

may08Higher Vitamin D intake requested.

Authors of a study from Children’s Hospital and Research Center argue for higher vitamin D supplementation, particularly among pregnant women, nursing infants, elderly and African Americans. They call for increases in current recommendations of 200IU’s for children and 800-1000 IU’s of Vitamin D# for adults. * Vitamin D is manufactured by the body on exposure to sunlight which is compromised in northern climates and by excessive use of sun block creams. Some D can be found in low quantities in foods. In adults a D deficiency may increase osteoporosis, muscle weakness, fractures, cancer, autoimmune, infectious, and cardiovascular diseases. In children a deficiency can cause cognitive and behavioral problems. Vitamin D affects proteins in the brain involved in learning and memory, motor control and even maternal and social behavior. The disease rickets has also been on an increase in infants due to a lack of Vitamin D. Caucasian fair skinned people need 15 minutes of sunlight a day and darker skinned people may need up to 40 minutes a day.

* The Healthy Baby Prenatal vitamins AM & PM formula contain 550 IU’s of Vitamin D3. Other prenatal multivitamins contain about 400 IU’s of D. www.healthybabyvitamins.com or www.expectingfitness.com

may08Can a mom’s diet control the sex of a baby?

may08From the University of Exeter and Oxford comes a study theorizing that a mom’s diet could influence the sex of her child as the moms who had eaten the most calories seemed to be more likely to have boys. 56% of women with the highest intake had boys and only 46% did with the lowest caloric intake.

Animal studies have also shown more girls being born in leaner times. Other studies show moms nursing boys longer than girls. The researchers do reiterate that “sperm” does determine the sex of the baby – not food.

The diet theory of more calories controlling the sex outcome doesn’t quite work. The facts are:

1/ boy sperm are faster but weaker than girl sperm and will get to the egg quicker. If it’s there, if not the boy sperm will die off,

2/ girl sperm being slower but stronger will get to the egg if ovulation is later than the arrival of the boy sperm. This is the only way how a woman with a very “regular cycle” can time intercourse to control the sex of her baby with 87% accuracy.

3/ more boys are conceived than girls (faster sperm), but more girls are born and survive the first year (stronger sperm). Hence there are more women in the world than men.

You would then have to theorize that boys may need more nutrition to survive than the “sturdier” girls that can handle “leaner” situations better. This could be a “Mother Nature’s” “evolutionary design to facilitate more women being born in leaner “famine” times for better survival of the human race. Women are the ones with the womb. Developing countries proportion of boys is also found to be dropping.

So it is not that eating more will enhance your chances of having a boy, it is more likely that eating more will enhance your chances of a boy fertilized egg surviving conception and pregnancy.

may08Vaccinations and Neurological Disorders.

A private independent study, produced by Survey USA*, unlike those by pharmaceutical corporations, has shown dramatic links between neurological disorders and vaccinations. The study looked at 29,491 children from California and Oregon, 991 of whom had never been vaccinated. Results showed that twice the number of vaccinated children had autism and the rates of many other neurological disorders were much worse. The rates were for vaccinated boys 155% more neurological disorders than unvaccinated boys, 224% more ADHA, 61% more autism. In boys aged 11-17 the rates were 158% more neurological disorders, 317% more ADHA, and 112% more autism and in all boys and girls there was a 120% increase in asthma than in unvaccinated kids.

*Survey USA has among its clients most pharmaceutical companies, but were able to provide an unbiased study for less than $200,000 that the CDC with an $8 billion budget have been unwilling/unable to do. It was financed by Generation Rescue, a group of families with autistic children.

The America Medical Association also has not been able to show that vaccinations has saved any lives nor increased longevity. The biggest problem seems to be with multiple vaccinations given at the same time. Maybe it’s time we started questioning if not the validity of many vaccinations but at least spreading vaccinations out over time and only giving one at a time, to reduce toxicity. Also discuss with caregivers which if any vaccinations can be eliminated. Growing up in Europe in the 70’s when moms pushed you toward any kid with measles etc… so that you would ensure getting all of the childhood diseases you were “supposed to get”, as a means of “Immunizing” yourself, makes more sense. Personally, I had all diseases except chicken pox that all 14 year old females were mandatorily (by the state) vaccinated from if they hadn’t had it, to prevent any future possible birth defect should the disease be acquired during a pregnancy.

HBV-AMB Vitamins & Pregnancy. Low Vitamin B12 levels together with certain genes poses a higher risk of heart problems for the infant. A new Dutch study is advising women to consume a diet richer in B12 and to take supplements high in B12 and Folate and other B vitamins before conceiving to help influence the health off babies. The University of Texas found that Folate supplementation for a a year pre-pregnancy reduced "very early preterm " delivery (20-28 weeks) by 70% and "early preterm" delivery (28-32 weeks) by 50%. High preconceptional levels of vitamin B6 also boost fertility rates. Moms with lower vitamin B levels preconception seems to deliver fatter boys with a higher rate of high blood pressure. 2/1/08

Omega fatty acids and mental health. The UK government is now boosting funding for Omega research and how it relates to brain health, as more studies are showing improved behavior, reduced depression, violent behavior, schizophrenia etc..especially during and after pregnancy. But there seems to be a misunderstanding of the correlation of improving the Omega-3 to omega - 6 levels for optimal mental health that needs more research. 2/12/08

pomegranetPomegranate Juice and Male fertility. A University of Turkey study found that regular consumption of pomegranate juice enhances the motility and quality of sperm. The anti-oxidant rich fruit is also linked to heart health, and protects against prostate cancer, Alzheimer's and cartilage loss. 3/1/08

formulaDHA fortified Infant formula danger. The Cornucopia Institute recently published a scathing report on the dangers of infant formulas fortified with DHA & ARA omega fatty acids. Normally these omega-3 and 6 fatty acids are vital for the health, growth and development of an infant baby. However, what is present in human breast milk is one thing, the synthetically manufactured oils added to infant formula are quite different. The DHA?ARA oils are extracted from laboratory grown fermented algae and fungus and processed with the toxic chemical "hexane" (a highly explosive petroleum by-product of gasoline refining similar in it's make-up to benzene - a well known carcinogen and listed by OSHA and the EPA has hazardous causing neurological damage, birth defects, ADHD, reduced IQ and mental deficiencies). They are marketed as, but are far from "close to breast milk". Yet marketing efforts have paid off by making more and more women believe that they are. Breast milk is of course always best as formula increases risk of infections, bacteria, diarrhea, SIDS, diabetes, cancer, obesity and asthma, as well as increasing moms diabetes and postpartum depression. But these fortified oils are increasing SIDS,diarrhea, jaundice gas etc.. more so. The study showed that babies do better on regular formula than on the DHA/ARA fortified formula.
